square cash watch app
DESIGNER + SOFTWARE ENGINEER, INTERNSHIP, FALL 2017
The Apple Watch counterpart app to the Square Cash App iOS app.
context
The Cash App on iOS had been progressing for the past few years, but the Watch app was not being maintained. As a result, the Watch app’s features likely no longer aligned with the user’s Cash App needs.
research
To get a sense of what users use the Cash App for, I pulled on the current data of users to see which features get the most impressions on the app. In addition, I surveyed current users of the iOS and Android Cash App to get a more qualitative perspective. Some of my findings included that, users…
- mostly use the iOS Cash App for P2P payments; very few do so on the Watch app
- often have their transactions using the Cash Card* declined due to low balance
- who have the Bitcoin wallet feature would often go on the app specifically to view Bitcoin balance
existing solution
The previous solution was a Watch app that allowed users to send payments from their Apple Watch.
new solution
Based on the research results, the existing app that supports P2P payments does not best fit current users’ needs. The new solution would have to follow the Apple Watch human interface guidelines: lightweight interactions, holistic design and personal communication. A solution for decreasing declined transactions and allowing users to monitor their Bitcoin would be a Watch app that allows users to view their account balance data.
what data to display
For users to read and understand the account balance data, they need the balance amount and the account to which it belongs.
conclusion
Since this was my first big design undertaking, I learned a lot and tons of takeaways from the project. Research is very important to know what you’re designing and for whom you’re designing. Once the outline of designs are made, the designs shouldn’t just be pretty and fancy, but should be designed with the platform and user in mind.
next steps
- If given more time, I would have wanted to design a way to switch between the bitcoin data (eg. holdings, exchange rate, current value)
- Conduct a survey and analyze more user interaction data to gauge whether this does align with user's needs better
- Design a feature to allow switching what balance data is shown on the watch's complications
